Dormeshia

Dormeshia’s journey in tap dance is a remarkable testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Born with rhythm in her veins, she has become a celebrated figure, earning the title "queen of tap" from The New York Times. Her accolades include the Doris Duke Artist Award, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, and the Bessie Award for Outstanding Creator/Choreographer for Rhythm is Life, among others. Dormeshia's electrifying performance in Broadway's After Midnight garnered her an Astaire Award for Best Female Performer.

As a choreographer and educator, Dormeshia has significantly contributed to the art form. Her choreography for Jelly’s Last Jam at New York City Center received rave reviews, and her full-length work, And Still You Must Swing, was recognized as one of the "Best of Dance" by The New York Times. Dormeshia is also the producer of the Ladies in the Shoe Tap Conference, celebrating women in tap dance, and co-directs the Jacob’s Pillow Tap Program, nurturing the next generation of dancers. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Barnard College, where she teaches tap dance, further solidifying her role as an influential educator in the field.

Beyond the stage, Dormeshia has influenced popular culture, having been the tap instructor for Michael Jackson. Her legacy is immortalized in the Forever Collection of U.S. Postage Stamps. Dormeshia continues to inspire through her artistry, pushing the boundaries of tap while honoring its rich traditions.
